Match Report: Spurs had been in fine form leading into the final, never more so than in the 5-1 semi final victory over Cheslea. There were favourites for the final, but on the day failed to live up to the expectation. Blackburn were probably more determined and won the match 21. Spurs just never really got going.
Blackburn opened the scoring with a goal from Matt Jansen, but Christian Ziege soon equalised for Spurs. Andrew Cole scored the winner in the 69th minute with a typical instinctive strike after a calamatious Ledley King mistake in the Spurs defence. Les Ferdinand could have made the match square after a close one-on-one chance with Friedel, but failed to make anything of it. Gus Poyet could have also turned the match Spurs way, with a sweet right foot shot hitting the post. In the final minute Teddy Sheringham controversially had a claim for a penalty turned down by referee Graham Poll
