Returning after the international break and still at our temporary Wembley home, saw a lacklustre display and defeat against a good Liverpool team. We just didn’t seem to get going – and a couple of Vorm mistakes saw us 2-0 down. Liverpool weren’t the outstanding team the media love-in would have us believe and had we been on our game, we would have been more than a match for them.
A tinkering of formation, set up and personnel all added to the poor performance – I mean, warming up with 3 central defenders, but starting with 2 – what was that all about – trying to confuse the opposition? Think it just confused our boys.
It’s a worry that Hugo is out with a thigh injury for a few games, as Vorm is just not up to it and the struggle to score the goals the other end means our usually mean defence have to be meaner than ever.
It is still early days, but our failure to strengthen at all means we have no other options during this tough time. We’ve allowed Arsenal and Man Utd to catch us up following the 6 point cushion our superb 2nd half show at Old Trafford created.
There’s definitely work to be done, confidence needs a boost and I am sure it will click together – but it needs to be sooner rather than later. We visit Inter on Tuesday, with UEFA’s new fangled 5.55 kick off time(!) and here’s hoping our focus has been on that and we kick off the campaign with a good performance and result.
